Weight change observed across tirzepatide A1C trials.

Mounjaro® has not been studied specifically as a weight-loss medication. Across SURPASS-program studies of adults with type 2 diabetes designed to measure A1C reduction, mean body weight reductions were dose-dependent, ranging from 12 lb to 25 lb, qualified as a study observation tied to A1C trials.

Important · About these numbers. The weight numbers above are study observations from SURPASS-program trials designed to measure A1C reduction in adults with type 2 diabetes. Individual results vary. For tirzepatide outcomes from dedicated weight-loss trials, see Zepbound® KwikPen® →, FDA-approved for chronic weight management.

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Tirzepatide

DELIVERY: Once-weekly injection

MECHANISM: Dual GIP / GLP-1

FDA-APPROVED USE: Type 2 diabetes

Dual receptor activation. Once weekly.

Tirzepatide is a single-molecule dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. It directly activates both GIP and GLP-1 pathways to regulate blood sugar, lower A1C, and improve metabolic markers. Appetite reduction and weight effects are secondary observations tied to A1C-trial populations on background diabetes therapy.

GIP receptor activation

Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide. The "second" incretin hormone, often paired with GLP-1 in the body's natural glucose response.

Once-weekly titration

Start at 2.5 mg for 4 weeks, then 5 mg. Step up to 10 or 15 mg as your clinician directs.

GLP-1 receptor activation

Helps regulate appetite, slow gastric emptying, and support insulin response — the same family of mechanisms behind semaglutide.

Weight Loss Treatment FAQs

Is Mounjaro®approved for weight loss?

No. Mounjaro® is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes. Eli Lilly states that Mounjaro® is not a weight loss drug. Some clinicians prescribe tirzepatide off-label as part of a weight-loss program. Your Maximus clinician will determine whether Mounjaro® is appropriate based on your medical history. For FDA-approved tirzepatide for weight loss, see Zepbound® KwikPen® — same active ingredient, on-label for chronic weight management.

What's the difference between Mounjaro® and Zepbound®?

Both contain tirzepatide. Mounjaro® is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes. Zepbound® is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with a weight-related condition, and for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. Same molecule, different indications, different dose ladders. The choice typically comes down to insurance coverage and clinical fit.

How much weight will I lose on Mounjaro®?

Mounjaro® has not been studied specifically as a weight-loss medication. In studies of adults with type 2 diabetes designed to measure A1C reduction, mean body weight reductions were 12–17 lb on 5 mg, 15–21 lb on 10 mg, and 17–25 lb on 15 mg. For tirzepatide outcomes from dedicated weight-loss trials, see Zepbound® KwikPen®, FDA-approved for chronic weight management. Individual results vary.

What does "dual GIP and GLP-1" mean?

Tirzepatide activates two hormone receptors at once: GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). Both hormones are involved in your body's natural glucose and appetite regulation. Mounjaro® is the first single molecule to target both.

How is Mounjaro® taken?

Once-weekly subcutaneous self-injection on the same day each week. Start at 2.5 mg for 4 weeks (titration), then step up to 5 mg, 10 mg, or 15 mg. Your Maximus clinician will provide instructions.
